General Information

Passports or Electronic ID cards can only be applied for in person at the German Embassy. Please remember to bring all the necessary documents and your application form with you. For minors both parents or the guardian of the applicant must be present at the appointment.

Book an appointment

In order to apply for a German document you have to book an appointment. Appointments can booked at www.nikosia.diplo.de/appointments.

Please study carefully the general instructions for applications below as incomplete applications might not be processed and a new appointment needs to be booked.

Application for a German Passport

The following documents have to be presented for the application of a German passport (original and one copy):

• Passport application form
• copy of your current passport
• proof of German nationality (e.g. birth certificate, certificate of nationality, or certificate of naturalization)
• Abmeldebescheinigung (i.e. a certificate that you are not registered in Germany, if your last place of residence was in Germany)
• for married persons: proof of the family name either by declaration of the family name (Namenserklärung) or copy of the family book (Familienstammbuch) and marriage certificate
• for underage children: marriage certificate of the parents, name declaration (if applicable), passports of parents. Both parents or guardian and the child have to be present at the passport application. If one parent has the sole custody this has to be proved.
• passport fee: Euro 81.-- for persons older than 24 years, Euro 58.50 for persons younger than 24 years.
• -2- biometric photographs
• proof of residency in Cyprus (yellow/pink paper)
• PhD certificate if you wish to have your title entered in the passport (will have to checked against German registers)

Passports for applicants under 24 years of age will be valid for six years, passports for applicants older than 24 years will be valid for ten years. The 'Children's Passport' can only be issued for one year with the possibilty of extension for another year until the age of twelve.

Application for an Electronic ID card

The new German ID card containing a contactless electronic chip is a multi-function card the size of a credit card. The applicant’s photo is saved on the chip. If the applicant so desires, his/her fingerprints can also be stored on the chip as an extra security feature only possible from the age of 6.

This biometric data may only be read by official agencies (e.g. border officials, police).

The electronic ID function and the qualified electronic signature function are automatically activated .

German electronic ID card for applicants over 16

The information provided here applies for most routine cases presented to the German Embassy in Nicosia. Due to the complexity of the German passport law and the multitude of conceivable case scenarios each individual case may have to be treated differently and further documents can be requested.

Applicants for ID cards are required to apply in person. Please note that ID cards are being printed at the Federal Printing Office in Berlin. Therefore the processing time can take up to 6-8 weeks.

ID cards issued to applicants under 24 are valid for 6 years; all other ID cards are valid for 10 years.

The following documents are required in original and photocopy:

• Completed application form - please type or use capital letters.
• your ID card (if you already have one)
• your passport
• Birth Certificate (original and translation into German or English if born abroad)
• Naturalisation certificate /certificate of citizenship (if applicable)
• Marriage certificate/extract of German family book (if applicable)
• Confirmation of name change, if married abroad
• PhD certificate if you wish to have your title entered in the passport
• Most recent German local authority de-registration form (‘Abmeldebestätigung’ - only applicable if the last place of residence was in Germany or if a German place of residence is shown in the passport.
• Recent proof of address in Cyprus (e.g. yellow paper)
• Two recent, identical, biometric passport photos with a bright background.

Please note that your application can only be accepted if the above documents are complete. Should your documents be incomplete a new appointment will be necessary.

Fees

The fees for German ID cards have to be paid on the day of application in cash.

ID card for applicants who are 24 years of age or over (valid for 10years)

ID card for applicants under 24 years of age (valid for six years)

Your PIN

All applicants aged over 15 years and 9 months at the time of application will receive a letter from the Bundesdruckerei containing their personal identification number (PIN), personal unlocking key (PUK) and the password to be used to lock or unlock the card. You will receive this letter even if you do not want to use the online ID function, and should keep it in a safe place.

Collecting your ID card

The new ID-card can only be collected from the Embassy in person!

Embassy staff may only give you your new ID card if you assure the passport/ID card office at the Embassy that you have received the PIN letter described above.

If you have not received a PIN letter, you are entitled to insist that a new ID card is issued.

You may collect your ID card from the Embassy from Monday-Friday, between 11:00-12:00 hrs .

Be sure to bring your old ID card with you (or your passport, if this is your first ID card application), in order to identify yourself.
